For me, the uplands mean relaxation, walking and 'wild swimming'. I had my first wild swim in a river in the Yorkshire Dales- cold but breath-taking - and I love walking through these hilly areas.

The uplands for me are somewhere to walk, relax, appreciate the space and enjoy the views as well as a landscape I'm involved with studying.

I knew little of the uplands until my daughter began working for the Sustainable Uplands project. Until then, I had taken for granted the supply of clean water we have, as well as the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District when on holiday. Now I have learnt how much the uplands supply for us in our day-to-day lives; from fresh water to farming livelihoods, I see these areas as vital to sustain and protect.

Place to live, work (hard), breathe, produce food, graze sheep, sustain life, supply water, habitat, and physical/mental/ spiritual wellbeing

A place in easy reach from my house to go running and chill out. In addition, it provides a nice study area to investigate how people interact with ecosystem services and conflicting ideas of what is best for the region.

The spot where I either look back to St Sunday Crag, or have it magically come into view through the clouds when I'm heading to Patterdale.

To me the uplands means escaping to the Lakes to cycle Hard Nott or climb Great Gable;anywhere I can relax & appreciate our stunning &peaceful scenery

The Uplands provide all the country's water supply! Enough said.

An area of upland with fantastic habitat for various birds of prey, many of which are absent due to the shooting interests in the area

Less visited than the Brecon Beacons, the airy ridges of the Black Mountains offer a unique vista of rugged South Wales and pastoral England

It's about the wide-open space, the sense of perspective, the clean air and the big, big sky; the view of forever.

They are spectacular, diverse and our biosphere is unique. Let's keep or even enhance that uniqueness
